BRINGING PLACES TO LIFE

LUDWIG IS A PLACEMAKER

Landscape animation is at the heart of placemaking because it sets the stage for resident and visitor enjoyment and consequently the commercial success of each place.

Innovative green infrastructure, street furniture, alfresco dining, biodiversity, and public art initiatives can re-define and re-invigorate a town or city, reflecting the present-day character, helping to heal the collective wounds of the past. For new developments place making is key to ensuring places continue to be successful in the future by delighting and supporting residents and visitors enabling a strong sense of ownership and consequently guardianship.

ADDRESSING PLACE STRUCTURE

LUDWIG IS A PLACE SHAPER

Collaboration is at the heart of place shaping because Place is inherently multi-functional with many different actors and stakeholders. In many public places outdated approaches to spatial planning have resulted in dysfunctional environments plagued by congestion, pollution, low perceptions of safety, poor biodiversity outcomes and the dominance of transport infrastructure.

Creative solutions to place re-shaping address the core issues at each place, reflecting the aspirations of all stakeholders. Anticipating future pressures builds resilience into new places.

THE CROWN ESTATE, LONDON

BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME

From 2013 to 2020 Ludwig curated placemaking initiatives across The Crown Estates‘ central London portfolio, building upon earlier place shaping public realm improvement projects he was involved in. He worked with specialist manufacturers to prototype new street furniture and managed the approval process which included legal agreements to facilitate leaving private kit on public land. The Crown Estates’ placemaking initiatives have set the standard for the other Great Estates to follow and the bronze Glasshouse Street planters have been replicated by the Portman Estate in Old Quebec Street.
