Originally developed as an Intensified Bus Priority (IBP) project, focused solely on providing a ‘tram’ like corridor for buses, the Route 38 project shifted in emphasis toward a more holistic Whole Route Corridor Strategy. This was linked to the introduction of the Traffic Management Act (TMA) and the requirement for highway authorities to assess the impact of traffic management proposals on all users and the network as a whole.
In this way this project set a benchmark for all future ‘Whole Route Corridor Strategies’. In particular, the unique assessment methodology and typological diagrams (shown above) have been used in other projects.
